Richard Ashton was born in Mawdesley, England, around 1553. He was baptized on either February 28 or December 25 of that year. His father was also named Richard Ashton, and his mother was Jane Hesketh.

Early Life and Family

Richard Ashton came from a family in Lancashire, England. He married Jane Cleyton on September 18, 1584. Together, they had five children: four sons and one daughter. Richard Ashton passed away in 1610 and was buried on March 23, 1611.

Becoming a Lawyer

In the 1570s, Richard Ashton began his training to become a lawyer. He joined Gray's Inn, which is one of the famous places in London where people learn to be lawyers. This training helped him understand laws and how the government worked.

A Career in Politics

Richard Ashton became involved in politics. In 1601, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Newton. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons, where laws are discussed and made.

By 1603, he also became the steward of Newton. A steward was an important person who managed affairs for a town or area. In 1604, he was elected again as the MP for Newton, continuing his work in the English Parliament.
