Richard Aubrey Veck is one of the earliest cricketers whose full name we know. It's not completely clear if people called him Richard or Aubrey, so we use his full name to be sure.
Who Was Richard Aubrey Veck?
Richard Aubrey Veck was a very talented cricket player from England. He was born in 1756 and lived until 1823. He played cricket during a time when the sport was still growing and becoming popular.
A Star Batsman
Veck was especially good at batting. He was known as a very successful batsman. This means he was excellent at hitting the ball and scoring runs. Even though he was a top player, a writer named John Nyren didn't mention him in his book, The Cricketers of my Time.
Many historians think Nyren's book isn't always accurate because he left out great players like Veck. Records and reports from Veck's time show that he was truly one of the best batsmen around.
His Cricket Career
Richard Aubrey Veck played for his home county, Hampshire, for nine seasons. This was from 1776 until 1784. He was a regular and important player for the team.
He played in 35 known first-class matches during his career. A "first-class" match is a high-level cricket game, often played between professional teams or counties.
Why He Stopped Playing
Veck stopped playing cricket when he was 28 years old, in 1784. It seems he left the sport to start his own business. He settled in Bishops Waltham, which is where he later passed away in 1823.
