Richard C. Bowes (born January 8, 1944 – died December 24, 2023) was an American writer. He was known for writing exciting science fiction and fantasy stories.

Early Life and Writing Career

Richard Dirrane Bowes was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 8, 1944. He went to school in Boston and on Long Island, New York. His brother, David Bowes, is a well-known artist. Richard studied writing at Hofstra University. After finishing college in 1965, he moved to Manhattan. There, he worked various jobs while starting his writing career.

Richard Bowes began publishing his special kind of fiction in the early 1980s. His first novels included Warchild, Feral Cell, and Goblin Market. These books helped him become known as a new voice in fantasy and science fiction.

Award-Winning Stories

In 1992, Bowes started writing a series of stories about a character named Kevin Grierson. These stories were often published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. Later, they were put together into a novel called Minions of the Moon.

One of these stories, "Streetcar Dreams," won the World Fantasy Award in 1998. This is a very important award for fantasy writers. His novel Minions of the Moon also won an award in 2000.

Collections and Later Works

Richard Bowes also published collections of his short stories. One collection, Transfigured Night and Other Stories, came out in 2001. It included a new story called My Life in Speculative Fiction. More of his stories were later collected in Streetcar Dreams and Other Midnight Fancies in 2006.

In his later years, Bowes wrote a series of stories about "Time Rangers" and ancient gods. These stories were collected in a book called From the Files of the Time Rangers, published in 2005. Two stories from this series, "The Ferryman’s Wife" and "The Mask of the Rex," were nominated for the Nebula Award. This is another major award in science fiction.

In 2013, Bowes released Dust Devils on a Quiet Street. This book was about writers living in New York City around the time of 9/11. It was also recognized on shortlists for the World Fantasy and Lambda Awards.

His short story "There's a Hole in the City" (2005) won several awards. These included the StorySouth Million Writers Award and the International Horror Guild Award. It was also nominated for a Nebula Award.

Another of his stories, "If Angels Fight," won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novella in 2009. Richard Bowes passed away on December 24, 2023, at the age of 79.
