Richard Crowle's Family and Early Life
Richard Crowle came from a well-known family in Kingston upon Hull. His grandfather, George Crowle, was a very important person in the town. George served as the town's sheriff in 1657, which was like a chief law enforcement officer. He was also the Mayor of Hull twice, in 1661 and 1679. The mayor is the head of the city government.
Richard's father was William Crowle, a merchant from Springhead. William also held an important job in Hull as the chamberlain in 1688 and 1689. A chamberlain was in charge of the town's money. Richard's aunt, Elisabeth, married another Member of Parliament named Daniel Wilson.
Becoming a Lawyer
Richard Crowle went to school in Beverley. After that, he studied at St John's College, Oxford, which is a famous university. To become a lawyer, he then went to a special place in London called the Inner Temple. This was one of the main places where people learned to be lawyers in England. In 1724, Richard finished his studies and was "called to the bar." This means he officially became a lawyer and could practice law.
His Time as a Politician
Richard Crowle wanted to follow in his family's footsteps and become a Member of Parliament. In 1747, he tried to become the MP for Hull, taking over from his brother George Crowle. However, he did not win that election.
But Richard didn't give up! He tried again in 1754 and this time he was successful. He was elected as the MP for Hull and served in Parliament until 1757, the year he passed away.
Personal Life
Richard Crowle was married to Elizabeth. Her father, John Pearman, was a timber merchant from London. Richard and Elizabeth had one son. They lived in a place called Fryston Hall in West Yorkshire.
