Joining the NBA
In 1991, the Phoenix Suns picked Richard Dumas in the NBA draft. He was the 46th player chosen that year. However, before the 1991–92 season began, Dumas faced a challenge. He was suspended from the NBA for not following the league's rules about player conduct. During his suspension, he played basketball in Israel for a team called Hapoel Holon.
Rookie Season Success
Dumas finally started his NBA rookie season 19 games into the Suns' amazing 1992–93 season. He quickly showed how good he was. He scored an average of 15.8 points per game and grabbed 4.6 rebounds per game. His strong play helped the Phoenix Suns win 62 games, which was the best record in the league that year. This means he was recognized as one of the best new players in the league.
