Early Life
Richard Fuller was likely the third son of Thomas Fuller. Thomas was a landowner from a place called FitzHarris, near Abingdon-on-Thames. Richard's mother was Hester Alder.
He had a brother named William Fuller, who also became a banker. He also had a sister, Martha Fuller.
Career
Starting a Bank
In 1737, Richard Fuller teamed up with Frazer Honywood to start a private bank. This bank was located on Lombard Street in London. It was first known as Atkins, Honeywood & Fuller.
Over the years, the bank moved locations and changed its name several times. By the time Richard Fuller died, it was called Richard Fuller, Sons & Vaughan. This bank later became part of the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Local Official
Richard Fuller inherited the FitzHarris estate from his father. As a landowner in Berkshire, he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Berkshire in 1754. A High Sheriff was an important local official responsible for law and order.
Becoming a Politician
Richard Fuller also entered politics. In 1764, he was elected to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Steyning in Sussex. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the government. He was elected without anyone running against him.
Later, in 1768, he was elected as an MP for Stockbridge in Hampshire. He held this position until 1774.
Family and Later Life
Around 1755, Richard Fuller married Susanna Barnard (1735–1789). They had nine children together. In 1768, he bought a large estate called The Rookery in Westcott, Surrey. He and Susanna lived there for the rest of their lives.
Richard Fuller passed away on 2 January 1782, at the age of 69. His wife Susanna died a few years later in 1789.
Richard's Children
Several of Richard and Susanna's children became notable:
- Richard Fuller joined his father's bank.
- Thomas Fuller also became a partner in the family bank.
- Lieutenant-General Sir Joseph Fuller (1771–1841) was a high-ranking military officer. He received a special honor called Knight Grand Cross of Hanover.
