Sir Richard Herbert was a brave Welsh knight who lived a long time ago, in the 1400s. He came from a place called Coldbrook Park, near Abergavenny. Many important people in the Herbert family, like the Barons Herbert of Chirbury, are his descendants. He was an important figure during a time of big changes in England and Wales.

Sir Richard's Family

Sir Richard Herbert was part of a very important Welsh family. His parents were William ap Thomas from Raglan Castle and Gwladys ferch Dafydd Gam. He had a famous brother named William Herbert, who became the first Earl of Pembroke.

His Marriage and Children

Sir Richard married a woman named Margaret. She was the sister of another important person, Sir Rhys ap Thomas. Richard and Margaret had two sons together. Their names were Sir William Herbert of Coldbrook and Sir Richard Herbert of Powys. Many years later, Sir Richard's great-grandson, Edward Herbert, became a Baron in 1629.

A Supporter of Poets

Sir Richard Herbert loved poetry and music. He was known for supporting many Welsh poets, who were called bards. This was a common thing for important Welsh families to do back then.

Sir Richard was a main supporter of a bard named Ieuan Deulwyn. He also helped other bards like Guto'r Glyn. He even held a special poetry contest at his home, Coldbrook House. In this contest, two bards, Ieuan Deulwyn and Bedo Brwynllys, debated with their poems. Several bards wrote poems praising Sir Richard for his support.

The Wars of the Roses

Sir Richard Herbert lived during a very difficult time in England's history. This period was known as the Wars of the Roses. It was a series of battles between two powerful families, the House of York and the House of Lancaster. They were fighting to decide who would be the King of England.

Fighting for the Yorkists

Like his brother William, Sir Richard supported the House of York. He fought alongside his brother in many battles. One of these important battles was the Battle of Edgcote. This battle was a victory for rebels who supported the Earl of Warwick and the Duke of Clarence.

His Capture and Burial

Sadly, Sir Richard was captured during the Battle of Edgcote. He was executed in 1469. Sir Richard Herbert is buried with his wife at Abergavenny Priory. This is a special church where other members of his family are also buried.
