Sir Richard Jenkins (born February 18, 1785 – died December 30, 1853) was an important British politician and leader. He served as a Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury twice: first from 1830 to 1832, and again from 1837 to 1841. He also held a very important position as the Chairman of the East India Company in 1839.

Who Was Richard Jenkins?

Richard Jenkins was born in a place called Cruckton, near Shrewsbury. He was the oldest son of Richard Jenkins, who lived at Bicton Hall in Shropshire. He married Elizabeth Helen Spottiswoode. Her father, Hugh Spottiswoode, also worked for the East India Company. Richard and Elizabeth had a son named Colonel Richard Jenkins, who became a soldier in the 1st Bengal Cavalry.

What Did Richard Jenkins Do?

Richard Jenkins had a long and interesting career. He worked in the Bombay Civil Service from 1800 to 1828. This service was part of the British administration in India.

His Time in India

From 1807 to 1827, Jenkins was the British Resident at Nagpur. This meant he was the main British official representing the government in that area of India. He was present during important historical events like the Battle of Seetabuldee and the capture of Nagpur. After his time in India, he became a Director of the East India Company from 1832 until his death in 1853.

Special Awards

In 1838, he was given a high honor: he was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB). He also received the Third Mahratta War medal for his service.

Joining Important Societies

Richard Jenkins was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. This society is for people who study geography and exploration. In 1841, he also became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for top scientists and thinkers. His nomination for this honor said he was a worthy person because of his "Eminence as a Political Character in India" (meaning he was a very important political figure in India), his knowledge of "Oriental Literature" (writings from Eastern cultures), his helpful reports to the government in India, and how well he managed affairs in a region called Berar.
