Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Richard Jones was a Welsh politician who lived a long time ago, from 1578. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for England. He was also a strong supporter of King Charles I during a big conflict called the English Civil War.

Who Was Richard Jones?

Richard Jones was born in 1578. He came from a family in Trewern, Wales. His family was important in the area.

Early Steps in Politics

Richard Jones started his political journey as the High Sheriff of Radnorshire. This was an important job, like being the main law enforcement officer for a county. He held this role around 1614 or 1617.

Later, in 1628, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Radnorshire. This meant he represented his area in the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament. He served until 1629. At that time, King Charles I decided to rule without Parliament for eleven years.

Supporting the King

In April 1640, Richard Jones was again elected as a Member of Parliament, this time for Radnor. This Parliament was known as the Short Parliament.

When the English Civil War began, Richard Jones strongly supported King Charles I. He was a "commissioner of array" for the King in 1642. This meant he helped raise money and soldiers for the King's army.

After the War

By October 1645, the King's side was losing the war. Richard Jones decided to submit to Parliament. He asked to "compound," which meant he wanted to pay a fine to keep his property and avoid further punishment.

His fine was first set at £144 in 1648. However, he explained that he only had a limited income from his estate. So, his fine was reduced to £73. By 1652, he was allowed to fully enjoy his property again.

His Family Life

Richard Jones married a woman named Margaret. She was the daughter of John Price of Pilleth. They had two sons together, but sadly, both of them passed away before Richard did.
