Richard McCarty (born February 19, 1780 – died May 18, 1844) was an important American politician from New York. He served in the United States Congress and held other public offices during the early 1800s.

Early Life and Education

Richard McCarty was born on February 19, 1780, in a place that later became the town of Coeymans, New York. His father was General David McCarty, who was also a politician. Richard went to the local schools in his hometown.

Public Service and Political Career

Richard McCarty began his career in public service as a County Clerk for Greene County. He held this job twice: first from 1811 to 1813, and again from 1821 to 1822. A County Clerk is an official who keeps important records for the county.

Serving in Congress

McCarty was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. He was elected to the 17th United States Congress, which is part of the United States government. He served as a representative for New York from December 3, 1821, until March 3, 1823. In Congress, he helped make laws for the country.

Later Life and Contributions

After his time in Congress, Richard McCarty became the President of the Lafayette Bank in New York City. He was also chosen to be part of a special group that welcomed General Lafayette when he visited the United States. General Lafayette was a French hero who helped America during the Revolutionary War. His visit in 1824 and 1825 was a very big event!

Richard McCarty passed away in New York City on May 18, 1844. He was buried at the Adams Cemetery in Coxsackie. His brother, John McCarty, also became a politician and served as a State Senator in New York.
