Richard Mompesson's father was William Mompesson, who lived in a place called Maiden Bradley in Wiltshire. Richard started working for the royal family around 1574. He was an "esquire of the royal stables," which meant he helped manage the King's horses and stables.

Family Life and Marriages

Sir Richard Mompesson was married three times during his life. His first marriage was around 1587 to a woman named Mary. She was the widow of Edward Sutton, 4th Baron Dudley.

What Did Sir Richard Mompesson Do?

In 1603, Richard Mompesson was given the title of "Knight" by King James I. This was a special honor given for his services to the King. However, he did not get any higher positions in the government after that.

Where Did He Live?

After his time serving the King, Sir Richard Mompesson moved to a quiet life. He first lived in West Harnham, which is near Salisbury. Later, he moved into the Cathedral Close in Salisbury itself. This is an area right next to the famous Salisbury Cathedral.

He did a lot of work on a house there, making it much bigger and better. This house is now known as Arundells. Interestingly, another person from his family, Sir Thomas Mompesson, built another famous house nearby called Mompesson House. That house was finished in the early 1700s.
