Richard Neville (born 1655, died 1717) was an English politician. He was a member of the Whig party. He served in the English and British Parliament from 1695 to 1710. He came from a place called Billingbear in Berkshire.

Richard Neville was born on October 12, 1655. His family lived at a place called Billingbear House in Berkshire, England. His father, also named Richard Neville, was a soldier. He worked for King Charles I.

Richard Neville studied law at a place called the Middle Temple in 1673. When his father passed away in 1678, Richard inherited the family home, Billingbear. He later married Catharine Grey. Her father was Ralph Grey, an important person called the 2nd Baron Grey of Werke.

Richard Neville's Political Career

Richard Neville was a Whig politician. The Whigs were one of the main political groups in England at the time. They generally supported more power for Parliament.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Neville first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for Berkshire in 1690. He lost that election by a small number of votes. However, in the 1695 English general election, he was elected without anyone running against him. This meant he officially became an MP.

As an MP, Richard Neville took part in important votes. In 1696, he voted to set the price of guineas, which were gold coins. He also voted on a special legal process called an attainder against Sir John Fenwick.

In 1698, he was re-elected without opposition. He voted against a bill about reducing the size of the army. He was a supporter of his brother-in-law, Lord Tankerville, who worked for the Treasury.

Later Elections and Support

Neville was re-elected without opposition in 1701. In 1702 and 1705, he won his elections even though other people ran against him. In 1705, his son, Grey Neville, also became an MP.

Richard Neville continued to support the government's plans. He voted for the government's choice for Speaker of the House in 1705. He also supported a bill about who would rule if the King or Queen was too young.

In 1708, he was re-elected as a Whig without opposition. In 1709, he spoke in favor of a bill to allow people from a region called Palatine to become English citizens. In 1710, he voted for the impeachment of Dr. Sacheverell, which was a big political event. He lost his seat in Parliament in the 1710 British general election.

Richard Neville's Family and Legacy

Richard Neville passed away on July 1, 1717. He had three children. His sons, Grey Neville and Henry Neville, also became Members of Parliament. His daughter, Catherine, was the grandmother of Richard Aldworth Neville, 2nd Baron Braybrooke, who became an important figure later on.
