Richard Riehle was an American actor who played many different interesting roles. Over his long career, he appeared in more than 400 movies and television shows. Early Life and College Education
Richard Riehle was born in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, on May 12, 1948. As a young student, he loved storytelling and performing. He decided to study drama so he could become a professional performer.
He went to college at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, earning a bachelor's degree. Later, he studied even more at the University of Minnesota. There, he earned a master's degree in theater. This deep training helped him learn how to play many different types of characters.
Acting on Stage, Television, and in Movies
After finishing school, Riehle began acting in live theater productions. He worked at the Meadow Brook Theatre in Rochester, Michigan, and acted in plays across the Pacific Northwest region.
Big Screen Roles
Soon, Riehle started getting parts in major films. One of his earliest movie appearances was in the Western film Rooster Cogburn. In 1989, he played a quartermaster named Kendric in the historical Civil War movie Glory.
During the 1990s, he appeared in many well-known films. He acted alongside Harrison Ford in the action thriller The Fugitive. He also appeared in family movies like Free Willy and Iron Will. In 1992, he played Carlson in the film adaptation of the classic book Of Mice and Men.
One of his most famous movie parts came in 1999. He played Tom Smykowski in the comedy Office Space. In that movie, his character famously described himself as a friendly "people person." He also voiced Sheriff Sam Brown in the animated film Home on the Range. Because of his cheerful appearance, Riehle portrayed Santa Claus in numerous holiday movies, including The Search for Santa Paws.

Science fiction fans know him from the Star Trek series. Riehle had parts in three separate series within the franchise. He played Batai in the famous The Next Generation episode named "The Inner Light". He also appeared in Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise.
