Richard Standish (born October 21, 1621 – died March 1662) was an English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government, in 1659 and 1660. During the English Civil War, he was a colonel in the Parliamentarian army, fighting for the side that supported Parliament.
Early Life and Family
Richard Standish was the son of Thomas Standish, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Preston. His mother was Anne Wingfield.
Richard inherited Duxbury Manor and Duxbury Hall when his older brother, Alexander, passed away in 1648. These were important family properties.
He married Elizabeth Legh, who was from Lyme, Cheshire. They had a large family together, with six sons and three daughters. One of his sons, also named Richard, later became a baronet in 1677.
A Career in Politics
Richard Standish was an active politician during a very busy time in English history. In 1654, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Lancashire. This happened during the First Protectorate Parliament.
He was re-elected for Lancashire in 1656, serving in the Second Protectorate Parliament. Later, in 1659, he was elected as an MP for Preston in the Third Protectorate Parliament.
In March 1660, he was elected again for Preston in the Convention Parliament. However, this election was later cancelled in June of that year.
Later Life and Legacy
Richard Standish passed away in March 1662 when he was 40 years old. He lived during a time of great change in England, playing a role in the country's government and military.
