Who Was Sir Richard?

His Early Years

Richard Johnstone was born on September 21, 1732. His father was Colonel John Johnstone, a military officer who passed away in 1741. His grandfather was Sir William Johnstone, 2nd Baronet.

Richard's mother was Charlotte. Her father, John van den Bempde, owned a large estate called Hackness Hall. This estate was located in Hackness, a village near Scarborough in Yorkshire.

Sir Richard Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone became a member of the House of Commons in 1790. The House of Commons is a key part of the British Parliament, where laws are made. He represented the area of Weymouth. He held this important position until 1796.

On July 6, 1795, he received a special honor. He was made a Baronet, which is a hereditary title given by the King or Queen. His title was "Baronet of Hackness Hall" in Yorkshire.

Family Life

In November 1756, Richard Johnstone married Catherine Agnew. She was the daughter of James Agnew. After Catherine passed away in 1790, he married again. On February 26, 1795, he married Margaret Scott, who was the daughter of John Scott.

Sir Richard and Margaret had three children:

  • Margaret Anne Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone (died 1819). She married George Johnstone.
  • Sir John Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone, 2nd Baronet (1799–1869). He later became the 2nd Baronet. In 1825, he married Louisa Augusta Venables-Vernon.

In 1793, Richard changed his last name to Vanden-Bempde. He did this through a special law passed by Parliament, honoring his mother's family. Then, in 1795, he was allowed by the King to add Johnstone back to his name. So, his full name became Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone.

Sir Richard passed away in July 1807, when he was 74 years old. His son, John, inherited his title and became the 2nd Baronet. Later, Sir Richard's grandson, Sir Harcourt Vanden-Bempde-Johnstone, 3rd Baronet, was given another special title, Baron Derwent, in 1881.
