Richard Wagner (born April 10, 1952 – died March 14, 2023) was a famous writer. He was born in Romania but later became a German citizen. He wrote many books, including short stories, novels, and essays.

His Life and Writing

Richard Wagner was part of a group called the Germans of Romania. These were people of German background who lived in Romania. His wife, Herta Müller, who is also a famous writer, was from this group too.

He studied German and Romanian books at Timișoara University. After finishing his studies, he worked as a German language teacher. He also worked as a journalist, writing for newspapers. At the same time, he started publishing his own poems and short stories in German.

In 1972, he helped start a group called the Aktionsgruppe Banat. This was a literary group of German-speaking writers who wanted to speak freely.

In 1987, Richard Wagner and his wife, Herta Müller, moved from Romania to West Berlin. They left Romania to escape the strict rules and censorship of the communist government led by Nicolae Ceaușescu. Censorship means the government controls what people can say or write. They separated in 1989.

Richard Wagner lived with Parkinson's disease for many years. He passed away in Berlin on March 14, 2023, when he was 70 years old.
