Richard Weymouth facts for kids
Richard Weymouth (1780/81 – 24 August 1832) was an important officer in the Royal Navy, which is the British Navy. He is best known for putting together a special songbook called the Naval, Military, and Village Hymn Book. This book was published in the year he died, 1832.
Weymouth created this hymn book for everyone to use, no matter their church or beliefs. He made sure to leave out songs that caused arguments about different religious ideas. He also didn't like really long songs, so his book reflected that.
Richard Weymouth was born around 1780 or 1781. He joined the Royal Navy and quickly moved up in rank.
In February 1801, he became a lieutenant, which is a junior officer. Later, in October 1813, he was assigned to the ship HMS Thisbe. This ship was in the River Thames at the time. By December 1814, he was promoted to the rank of commander.
Contributions and Later Life
Commander Weymouth was also very involved with an organization called the Bethel Union. This group worked to help sailors and spread religious teachings among them. He was a very active and helpful member of this union.
Richard Weymouth passed away in Devonport on August 24, 1832. He was 51 years old and had been ill for only about twelve hours before his death.
