Richard of Evesham, Abbot of Vale Royal facts for kids
Richard of Evesham was an important leader, known as an Abbot, at Vale Royal Abbey from 1316 to 1342. He was also sometimes called Richard of Eynsham. People at the Abbey thought he was very devoted to his faith.
Richard became Abbot during a difficult time. A big famine (when there isn't enough food) started the same year he took charge. He also had to deal with ongoing problems between the Abbey and the local people who lived on its lands.
What Was the Conflict About?
The disagreement between the Abbey and its tenants had been going on for a long time, even before Richard became Abbot. The people living on the Abbey's land, especially in places like Darnhall, felt that the Abbot was not fair. They believed he was a harsh landlord.
Why Were People Upset?
The tenants did not want to accept the Abbot's claim to be their feudal lord. This meant they didn't want to follow his rules or pay him taxes and services. They felt he was being unfair and trying to control too much of their lives.
Difficult Times for Abbot Richard
The situation became very tense during Abbot Richard's time. The tenants were so angry that one time, when he was traveling to collect the Church's tithes (a type of tax paid to the church), he was attacked.
In 1320, the conflict grew even worse. A monk from the Abbey was hurt in Tarvin. Sadly, a servant who worked for Abbot Richard also lost his life during these troubles in Darnhall.
