The Richmond Art Museum is a cool place to see amazing art! It started way back in 1898. Back then, it was called the Art Association of Richmond, Indiana. Two important people helped create it: an artist named John Elwood Bundy and a writer and lawyer named William Dudley Foulke.

A woman named Ella Bond Johnston was the president of the Richmond Art Association for many years. She led the museum from 1899 all the way to 1915.

Discovering the Art Collection

The museum has a really special collection of art. It includes many important paintings by American Impressionist artists. Impressionism is a style of painting that uses light and color to capture a moment.

Famous Art Groups

You can see art from several famous groups of artists here:

  • The Hoosier Group: These artists were from Indiana.
  • The Richmond Group: Another group of talented artists from the Richmond area.
  • The Taos School: Artists who worked in Taos, New Mexico.

Unique Ceramics and Paintings

The museum also has a great collection of ceramics. This includes many pieces made by the Overbeck Sisters. Their beautiful work is kept in McGuire Memorial Hall. This hall is actually inside Richmond High School! It's pretty unique because the Richmond Art Museum is thought to be the only public art museum connected to a public high school.

One of the most famous paintings in the museum is a very large self-portrait. It was painted by the well-known American Impressionist artist William Merritt Chase. He painted it especially for the museum between 1915 and 1916.
