The Story of Riesen Candy
How Riesen Started in the 1930s
Back in the 1930s, most small candy shops in Germany sold sweets straight from big jars. But then, Storck, the company behind Riesen, did something new. They introduced the very first wrapped and branded caramel candy. It was called the Storck 1 Pfennig Riesen. This chewy caramel quickly became a favorite because of its great taste.
Riesen Grows Up in the 1940s
The 1 Pfennig Riesen candy changed over time. It became the 2 Pfennig RIESEN and later just Storck RIESEN. During this period, you could find it in several different flavors, including a chocolate caramel version.
Becoming the Chocolate Riesen in the 1980s
A big change happened in the 1980s. The chocolate-caramel candy got a new look and taste when it was covered in dark chocolate. This is how it became the "Chocolate Riesen" we know today. From then on, Storck Chocolate Riesen were sold in bags with each piece wrapped separately.
Going Global in the 1990s
The Riesen brand became very successful and started to sell its candies all over the world. In 1991, Riesen was introduced to the United States. Today, Riesen is a well-known candy in many countries. These include Germany, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, and Canada.
New Flavors and Why Some Don't Stick (2000s)
In 2001, a new flavor called Peanut Riesen was launched. This candy had chopped peanuts mixed into the caramel, all covered in chocolate. However, it was stopped in 2002. Sometimes, new flavors don't sell as well as expected, and companies decide to focus on their most popular products.
