Riit (pronounced "reet") is the stage name for Rita Claire Mike-Murphy. She is a talented Inuk musician and a friendly television host. Riit comes from Pangnirtung, a beautiful community in Nunavut, Canada. Many people know her as the host of Anaana's Tent, a children's show on APTN.

Riit's Music Journey

Riit started her music career by releasing her first collection of songs, called an EP, in 2017. This EP was simply titled Riit. She worked with the band The Jerry Cans and producer Michael Phillip Wojewoda on this project. It was released through Aakuluk Music.

First Album and Awards

In 2019, Riit released a single song called "Qaumajuapik". She even performed this song live on CBC Radio One's Q show in May of that year. Her full album, Ataataga, came out in October 2019. Graham Walsh produced this album, and it was released by Six Shooter Records.

Ataataga received a lot of praise. It was nominated for a Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2020. The Juno Awards are like the Canadian Grammys, celebrating the best music in Canada. Her album was also considered for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize, which honors Canadian albums based on artistic merit.

Riit's song "#uvangattauq" was also recognized. It was a finalist for the 2020 SOCAN Songwriting Prize. This prize celebrates great songwriting in Canada. For this song, Riit collaborated with South African-Canadian singer Zaki Ibrahim, who sang the English parts.

Recent Collaborations

In 2020, Riit joined fellow artist Terry Uyarak as a duet vocalist. They sang together on his song "Anuri".

Television Work

Besides her music, Riit is well-known for her work on television. She is the host of Anaana's Tent, a children's series on APTN. This show helps children learn and grow.

Emerging Talent Award

For her excellent work on Anaana's Tent, Riit received the Emerging Talent Award from the Youth Media Alliance in 2019. This award celebrates new and promising talent in children's media.
