Riit (which is ᕇᑦ in Inuktitut) is the stage name for Rita Claire Mike-Murphy. She is an Inuk musician and TV star from Pangnirtung, Nunavut, Canada. Many people know her as the host of the children's TV show Anaana's Tent on APTN.
Riit's Music Journey
Riit started her music career in 2017. She released her first music collection, an EP (which is like a mini-album), called Riit. She worked with the band The Jerry Cans and producer Michael Phillip Wojewoda on this project. It was released by Aakuluk Music.
In 2019, Riit released a song called "Qaumajuapik". She even performed this song live on CBC Radio One's show Q in May of that year.
Her Album Ataataga
Later in October 2019, Riit released her full album, Ataataga. This album was produced by Graham Walsh and came out on Six Shooter Records.
Ataataga was a big success! It was nominated for a Juno Award in 2020. The Juno Awards are like the Grammy Awards for Canadian music. Her album was up for the Indigenous Music Album of the Year. It was also considered for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize, which celebrates the best Canadian albums.
Riit's song "#uvangattauq" was also recognized. It was a finalist for the 2020 SOCAN Songwriting Prize. On this song, she worked with South African-Canadian singer Zaki Ibrahim, who sang the English parts.
Other Music Projects
In 2020, Riit also sang a duet with Terry Uyarak. She was a guest vocalist on his song "Anuri".
Riit on Television
Besides her music, Riit is well-known for her work on TV. She hosts the children's series Anaana's Tent on APTN. This show helps teach children.
In 2019, she won the Emerging Talent Award from the Youth Media Alliance. This award recognized her great work on Anaana's Tent.
