Ring girl facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A ring girl is a person, usually a young woman, who works at sports events like boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts (MMA) matches. Their main job is to walk around the ring between rounds, holding up a sign that shows which round is coming next. They are also sometimes called number girls or round girls.

History of Ring Girls

Ring girls first appeared a long time ago in a sports magazine called Ring Magazine. In 1965, the magazine showed a picture of a model from Las Vegas holding a sign at a boxing match. Soon after, boxing event organizers started hiring young women to walk around the ring with signs. This helped the audience know which round was next in the fight.

Ring Girls in Modern Sports

Ring girls are still a part of many combat sports today. Their roles can be a bit different depending on the sport.

Professional Wrestling

In professional wrestling, ring girls sometimes help by taking away things like jackets, robes, or championship belts that wrestlers leave in the ring before a match starts.

For example, in the 1980s, World Wrestling Entertainment had ring girls called the Federettes. Also, since 2002, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling has used different female wrestlers and assistants as ring girls.

During the first year of WWF Monday Night Raw, WWE also had traditional ring girls. These girls carried signs with different slogans related to Raw between the wrestling matches.
