Rita Mount (born February 7, 1885, died January 22, 1967) was a talented Canadian painter from Montreal. She was known for her beautiful landscape and marine paintings.

Early Life and Training
Rita Mount was born in Montreal in 1885. She started her art studies at a young age, around ten years old. Her cousin, Georges Delfosse, was also an artist. He was 16 years older than her and taught her drawing. He also taught other students like Rodolphe Duguay.
Rita Mount took summer classes with famous artist Maurice Cullen. She did so well that she won a two-year scholarship. This allowed her to study at the Art Association of Montreal. This was a private art school and museum.
Studying Abroad
To learn even more, Rita Mount traveled to other countries. In 1910, when she was 25, she studied art in Paris, France. She attended the Atelier Delécluze and the International Circle of Fine Arts. She also studied in New York City at the Art Students League. There, she learned from Frank DuMond. She also took classes on painting landscapes with John F. Carlson in Woodstock, New York.
After finishing her studies, Rita Mount came back to Canada. She opened her own art studio in Montreal.
Artistic Journeys and Recognition
Rita Mount loved to travel to find inspiring places to paint. She explored Canada's Pacific Coast in 1934, visiting places like Banff. She also went to Victoria, Yellowstone Park, and Wyoming in 1937. Later, she explored the Atlantic side of Canada, including Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and Gaspésie.
She became especially well-known for her paintings of the ocean, called marine paintings. These paintings were so popular that she had a special art show just for them in 1934. This show was held at the Art Association of Montreal.
Rita Mount was also a member of important art groups. She was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. She was also part of the Independent Art Association.
Later Life
Rita Mount lived with her sister Marie Mount in Montreal. She passed away on January 22, 1967, at the Montreal General Hospital. She is buried in the Côte-des-Neiges Cemetery in Montreal.
Exhibitions
Rita Mount started showing her artwork when she was only 18 years old. She regularly displayed her paintings at the Art Association of Montreal. From 1910 onwards, her work was also shown at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 1916 and 1917, she presented her art at the Bibliothèque Saint-Sulpice. She exhibited alongside other artists like Claire Fauteux.
Legacy
Rita Mount's beautiful artworks are kept in important museums today. You can find her paintings in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Her art is also part of the collections at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the National Gallery of Canada.
When she passed away in 1967, her sister gave Rita's personal papers and letters to the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec. These documents are very special. They help us learn about the career of one of Quebec's talented female painters.
