Ritter is a small, unincorporated community located in O'Brien County, Iowa, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's managed as part of the larger county.
The Story of Ritter
Ritter began to grow when a major train company, the Chicago, Minneapolis & St. Paul Railroad, built its tracks through this area. When a community is "platting," it means that official maps are being drawn up to divide the land into smaller pieces for buildings and streets.
The community was given its name in honor of J. L. Ritter. He was a "dispatcher" for the railroad, which means he helped manage the trains and their schedules, making sure they ran smoothly and on time.
