The Ritz Tower is a super tall building in New York City. It's located at 465 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. This amazing 42-story building was built between 1925 and 1927. It was designed by famous architects Emery Roth and Thomas Hastings. When it was first built, the Ritz Tower was the tallest residential building in all of New York City! Today, it's a special landmark, recognized by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission since 2002.

History of the Ritz Tower

The Ritz Tower was built from 1925 to 1927 and officially opened on October 15, 1926. It was designed by two well-known architects, Emery Roth and Thomas Hastings.

Who Built the Ritz Tower?

The building was developed by a journalist named Arthur Brisbane. He wanted to create a very special place for people to live.

What is an Apartment Hotel?

The Ritz Tower was built as an "apartment hotel." This means it had many apartments, but they didn't have their own kitchens. Instead, food was made in big central kitchens. Then, it was sent up to each floor using special elevators called dumbwaiters.

Because it was an apartment hotel, the building could be built much taller than regular apartment buildings at the time. Arthur Brisbane worked with the Ritz-Carlton Company to manage the building. They also ran the restaurants inside, including a famous French restaurant called Le Pavillon.

Tallest Building in New York City

When the Ritz Tower was finished, it was the tallest residential building in New York City. Its design was inspired by classic European styles. It has many "setbacks," which are parts of the building that step back from the street as it goes higher. This makes the building look like it's reaching for the sky.

The lower parts of the building are very fancy, with carved decorations like small angels (called putti) and decorative pots (called urns). The very top of the tower has a pointy roof with a tall, thin monument called an obelisk.

Inside, the building was made with expensive materials like wood walls and special wooden floors. Arthur Brisbane wanted the Ritz Tower to be the most popular apartment hotel in the city.
