Where Does the River Aled Begin?

The River Aled starts its journey at a lake called Llyn Aled. This lake is located on a high area of land known as Mynydd Hiraethog. The river begins close to the village of Llansannan.

The River's Journey

After leaving Llyn Aled, the river flows through another smaller lake, Llyn Aled Isaf. From there, it travels north, passing through the village of Llansannan and an area called Bryn Rhyd-yr-arian. Finally, the River Aled meets the River Elwy to the east of the village of Llanfair Talhaearn.

How the River is Controlled

The flow of the River Aled is carefully managed. This is done using reservoirs and Llyn Aled itself. By controlling the water in the River Aled, the flow of the River Elwy is also managed, which helps keep water levels steady.

A Look Back in Time

Long ago, during the Middle Ages, the River Aled was very important. It acted as a natural border, separating different areas known as Commotes. These were like small local districts or regions. The river divided "Upper Aled" from "Lower Aled."

Fishing Fun on the River Aled

If you enjoy fishing, the River Aled offers a great experience! A large part of the river, on both sides, is managed by the Rhyl and St Angling Association. This area is near Bryn Rhyd-yr-Arian.

Here, you can try fly fishing in very peaceful surroundings. It's a fantastic place to catch wild brown trout. Later in the fishing season, you might even be lucky enough to catch sea trout or even Atlantic Salmon!
