The River Arth is a small river in Wales. It starts in the hills near Bethania, in Ceredigion. The river flows west for about 15 miles (24 km). Finally, it empties into Cardigan Bay at a place called Aberarth.

Discover the River Arth

The River Arth might be small, but it has some interesting features. It is one of the few rivers in Britain that experiences a special event. This event is called a tidal bore.

What is a Tidal Bore?

A tidal bore happens when the incoming ocean tide creates a wave. This wave then travels upstream against the river's flow. It's like a mini-wave moving up the river!

For the River Arth, this bore is usually only a few inches high. It does not travel very far upstream. The land rises steeply past the road bridge in Aberarth. This stops the bore from going any further into the river.

Protecting the River's Health

In the 1970s, the River Arth faced some challenges. It had issues with agricultural pollution. This pollution came from a dairy farm nearby. Agricultural pollution happens when things like animal waste or fertilizers from farms get into the water.

However, people worked to fix this problem. Better ways to control pollution were put in place. Also, the farm got new owners who helped improve the situation. Because of these changes, the river's health got much better. This shows how important it is to protect our natural environment.
