River Druie facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The River Druie (pronounced "DROO-ee") is a cool river in the northeast of Scotland. It's like a smaller helper river, also known as a tributary, that flows into the bigger River Spey.

What is the River Druie?

The River Druie starts its journey in the beautiful Rothiemurchus Forest. It's formed when two smaller streams, the Am Beanaidh and the Allt Drùidh, meet up. These streams flow through amazing places like Loch Einich and the Lairig Ghru.

Where Does the Druie Start?

Imagine two streams coming from different directions.

  • The Am Beanaidh stream flows north from a loch called Loch Einich. A loch is a Scottish word for a lake.
  • The Allt Drùidh stream flows northeast from a mountain pass called the Lairig Ghru.

These two streams join together about 4 miles (6 kilometers) southeast of a town called Aviemore. Right at this meeting point, the River Druie is born!

The Druie's Journey to the Spey

Once the Druie is formed, its waters flow under a special bridge called the Cairngorm Club Footbridge. It then meets another river, the River Luineag, just before a road bridge (the B970 road) at a place called Coylumbridge.

The River Luineag is also an interesting river! It starts from Loch Morlich, which is inside the Glenmore Forest Park. The Luineag collects all the water that drains from the northern slopes of a big mountain called Cairn Gorm.

After joining the Luineag, the River Druie flows for another 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) past a village called Inverdruie. Finally, it reaches its destination and joins the mighty River Spey at the southern end of Aviemore.
