Upper reaches of the River Ithon

The River Ithon is an important river in Powys, central Wales. It is a "tributary" of the River Wye. This means the Ithon is a smaller river that flows into the larger River Wye. In Welsh, the river is called Afon Ieithon.

The River Ithon: A Journey Through Wales

The River Ithon starts its journey high up in the hills. It begins between Kerry Hill and Glog Hill. From there, it flows south towards a village called Llanbadarn Fynydd.

Where Does the Ithon Start and End?

The Ithon begins in a wide, low area between two hills. These hills are Kerry Hill and Glog Hill. The river then travels south. It eventually joins the River Wye. This meeting point is about one mile south of Newbridge-on-Wye.

The Ithon's Twisty Path

After Llanbadarn Fynydd, the River Ithon takes a very winding path. It flows south through several villages. These include Llanbister, Llanddewi Ystradenni, and Penybont. The river then turns southwest. It even doubles back north for a bit towards Crossgates. From Crossgates, it flows southwest again. It passes by the town of Llandrindod Wells. It also flows near the old Cefnllys Castle.

Meet the Camddwr: An Ithon Tributary

The Camddwr is another smaller river. It is a "left-bank tributary" of the Ithon. This means it joins the Ithon from the left side if you are looking downstream. The Camddwr starts in the rolling countryside east of Llanbister. It flows mostly southwest. It joins the River Ithon at a place called Abercamddwr.
