Park History
River Oaks Park was officially opened in 2013. Before it became a park, this land was home to a large factory. This factory belonged to Sony, a well-known electronics company.
The Okuba Family's Land
The area where River Oaks Park now stands was once part of a large property. This property was known as River Oaks Ranch. It belonged to the Okuba family, a Japanese-American family from San Jose.
During World War II, many Japanese-American families, including the Okubas, were forced to leave their homes. They were sent to special camps far away. This was a difficult time for them.
After the war ended, the Okuba family bravely returned. They were able to get their land back. Their family's history is an important part of the park's story.
Park Location
River Oaks Park has a unique shape, like a crescent moon. It is found along River Oaks Parkway. This road is an important street in the northern part of San Jose.
The park is easy to reach, even without a car. It is just a short walk from the River Oaks station. This station is part of the VTA light rail system. The light rail helps people travel around the city.
