River Yeo (tributary of the Creedy) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The River Yeo is a river in Devon, England. It flows into the larger River Creedy. The River Yeo starts near a place called Whiddon Down. Interestingly, its starting point is only about two miles away from another river also named River Yeo, which flows into the River Taw.

About the River Yeo

The River Yeo is a smaller river that flows into a bigger one. This is what we call a tributary. Its journey begins near the A30 Road at Whiddon Down.

Where the River Flows

As the River Yeo travels, other smaller streams join it. These are also called tributaries.

  • The River Culvery joins the Yeo just south of Crediton.
  • Ford Brook flows into the Yeo at Neopardy.
  • The River Troney meets the Yeo at Yeoford.

Measuring the River's Height

Since 1997, a special tool called a flood gauge has been measuring the river's height at Yeoford. This helps people know how high the water is.

  • Normally, the river is less than 0.66 meters (about 2 feet) deep.
  • The highest water level ever recorded was 2.69 meters (nearly 9 feet) on November 25, 2012.

Places Along the River

Many interesting places are found along the River Yeo. As it winds through the countryside, it passes by:

  • Downs Crediton Golf Club
  • Fordton Mill
  • Salmonhutch and Salmonhutch Caravan Park
  • Beare Mill
  • Neopardy
  • Yeoford
  • Binneford
  • And several beautiful wooded areas like Martin's Moor Copse and Binneford Wood.

River Boundaries

The River Yeo also acts as a natural boundary for some local areas.

  • South of Crediton, it separates Crediton Civil Parish from Crediton Hamlets Civil Parish.
  • Southwest of Yeoford, it forms the boundary between Colebrooke Civil Parish and Crediton Hamlets Civil Parish.
  • Further southwest, it marks the border between Hittisleigh Civil Parish and Cheriton Bishop Civil Parish.

Fishing in the River Yeo

The River Yeo is a popular spot for fly fishing. This is a special way of fishing using artificial "flies" to catch fish. The Crediton Fly Fishing Club even owns a small part of the river for this activity.
