The Riverside Inn is a cool old building in Leland, Michigan. It's a restaurant and a hotel, right on East River Street. This special place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 because of its history.

A Look Back: The Riverside Inn's History

Around the year 1900, more and more tourists started visiting the area near Leland. Jacob Schwarz saw that people needed places to stay. So, in 1902, he built an inn close to where the Riverside Inn stands today.

Jacob Schwarz built other buildings too. In 1912, he built a bathhouse. Soon after, he changed it into a dance hall. Jacob ran the Riverside Inn until he passed away in 1917. His wife passed away in 1918.

After their parents passed, their daughters, Blanche and Anna, took over the inn. They ran it until 1924, when a fire sadly destroyed the building.

Instead of building a brand new inn, Blanche and Anna decided to use the old dance hall from 1912. They moved the building so it faced the river. They also added a second floor and changed the inside to create the new inn. Blanche and Anna continued to run the inn until 1957.

Today, the Riverside Inn is still open for business! It is now owned by Barb and Kate Vilter.

What It's Like Today: Riverside Inn's Style

The Riverside Inn is a two-story building. It is built in a style called Bungalow or American Craftsman. On the first floor, you'll find the restaurant and a bar. Upstairs, there are rooms for guests to stay in.
