The Roberts Riverwalk Hotel and Residence Detroit is a special building in Detroit, Michigan. It used to be called the Parke-Davis Research Laboratory. This building is located right by the Detroit River. It was once a very important place for science. Today, it is a fancy hotel. In 1976, it was named a National Historic Landmark. This means it is a place that is important to the history of the United States.

History of the Building

The Parke-Davis company moved its main offices to this spot in the 1870s. They chose this location because the Detroit River and nearby train tracks made it easy to transport things. Over time, the company built many buildings here. The whole area is now known as Stroh River Place. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is another list of important historical places.

The Parke-Davis Research Laboratory building was finished in 1902. Before it was built, the Detroit Boat Club was moved to Belle Isle. The first part of the lab was designed by a company called Donaldson & Meier. Later, famous architect Albert Kahn designed more parts. The building is made of brick and has three stories. It is about 120 feet long and 40 feet wide. It looks like many other important buildings from that time.

Why This Building Is Important

This building was the very first industrial research lab in the United States. It was built just for studying medicines and how they work. This was a new idea at the time. It helped start the way companies do scientific research today. This kind of research has led to many new medicines and health discoveries.

What Happened Later

The research lab was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976. A few years later, in 1979, Parke-Davis sold its buildings in Detroit. The Stroh family bought them.

The old lab building was later changed into a hotel and homes. It opened as The Roberts Riverwalk Hotel & Residence Detroit in May 2011.
