The Port-Daniel du Milieu River is a river located in Quebec, Canada. It flows through the beautiful Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region. This river passes through two main areas. First, it goes through the southern part of Rivière-Bonaventure. Then, it flows into the municipality of Port-Daniel–Gascons.

The Port-Daniel du Milieu River is a tributary. This means it flows into a larger body of water. It joins the northern part of a "barachois" near the village of Rivière-Port-Daniel. A barachois is like a lagoon or a sheltered bay. This barachois then opens into Port-Daniel Bay, which is part of Chaleur Bay. Chaleur Bay eventually connects to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The River's Journey

The Port-Daniel du Milieu River starts from small mountain streams. These streams are found in the southwest part of the Weir township. This area is within the unorganized territory of Rivière-Bonaventure. The river's source is on the southern side of a dividing line. On the north side of this line, Edgar brook flows.

Where the River Begins

The starting point of the river is:

  • About 1.9 km (1.2 mi) east of the Honorat township's eastern edge.
  • About 4.5 km (2.8 mi) north of the Port-Daniel township's border.
  • About 17.4 km (10.8 mi) northwest of the Canadian National railway bridge. This bridge crosses the mouth of the Bacharois de Rivière-Port-Daniel.

How the River Flows

From its source, the Port-Daniel du Milieu River flows for about 24.6 km (15.3 mi). It generally moves south, then southeast. The river mostly travels through forests and mountains.

Here's how its journey unfolds:

  • For 3.8 km (2.4 mi), it flows south, making a curve to the east. Here, it meets a creek from "La Chaine de Lacs" (a chain of lakes).
  • It continues 2.8 km (1.7 mi) south, reaching the border of Port-Daniel–Gascons.
  • Then, it flows 5.0 km (3.1 mi) southeast, meeting another stream.
  • It travels 4.2 km (2.6 mi) more to the southeast, collecting water from several small streams.
  • For 1.4 km (0.87 mi), it moves southeast until it meets the Dubuc stream.
  • It winds for 6.4 km (4.0 mi) to the southeast, where the Grum stream joins it.
  • Finally, it flows 1.0 km (0.62 mi) southeast to its end point.

The River's Mouth

The Port-Daniel du Milieu River flows into the northern part of the barachois. This is near the village of Rivière-Port-Daniel. At low tide, you can see the sand. The barachois is bordered by "Pointe à la Croix" on the east. A jetty sticks out from the south side. The Canadian National railway bridge and Route 132 connect these land strips.

This barachois then empties into "Baie de Port-Daniel du Milieu" to the southeast. This bay opens into Chaleur Bay. Chaleur Bay is about 2.8 km (1.7 mi) wide at its opening. It is bordered by "Cap de la Vieille" on the east and "Pointe du Sud-Ouest".

The river's end point is located:

  • On the west side of the village of Rivière-Port-Daniel.
  • About 0.4 km (0.25 mi) southwest of where the Port-Daniel River meets the bay.
  • About 1.8 km (1.1 mi) northwest of the Canadian National railway bridge. This bridge crosses the mouth of the barachois.

How the River Got its Name

The word "toponymy" is the study of place names. The name "Rivière Port-Daniel du Milieu" was officially recognized. This happened on December 5, 1968. The name was made official by the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
