The Rivière au Lard (which means Bacon River in English) is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows for about 21.2 kilometres (13.2 mi) (about 13 miles). This river passes through several towns, including Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel, Saint-Maurice, Saint-Narcisse, and Saint-Luc-de-Vincennes. It is located in the Les Chenaux Regional County Municipality within the Mauricie region.

Where the River Flows

The Rivière au Lard starts in the marshy areas east of Lac Valmont. This is in the town of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel.

River's Journey

As the river flows, it collects water from two smaller streams. It then travels about 4.2 kilometres (2.6 mi) (2.6 miles) to the east. Here, it crosses into the town of Saint-Maurice.

The river continues for another 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) (1.5 miles), passing a road near Désilets Lake. After that, it goes 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) (1.1 miles) further east. It then enters Saint-Narcisse for a short distance, about 0.9 kilometres (0.56 mi) (0.6 miles).

The river then turns south and flows back into Saint-Maurice for 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) (1.5 miles). It crosses a road near a small community called Radnor-des-Forges.

Final Stretch

The river then flows downhill for about 3.9 kilometres (2.4 mi) (2.4 miles) until it reaches Route 352. This is northeast of the village of Saint-Maurice.

From there, the river turns southeast. It flows for 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) (0.8 miles) and meets the Gagnon stream. Then, it goes another 2.0 kilometres (1.2 mi) (1.2 miles) to join the Cordon stream. Finally, it travels 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) (0.9 miles) to cross a road that runs along the north side of the Champlain River.

The Rivière au Lard flows for a final 0.9 kilometres (0.56 mi) (0.6 miles) before it reaches its end.

Where it Ends

The waters of the Rivière au Lard flow into the Champlain River. This meeting point is in Saint-Maurice. It is about 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi) (2.1 miles) northeast of Route 352. It's also about 1.4 kilometres (0.87 mi) (0.9 miles) from the Cap-de-la-Madeleine area of Trois-Rivières.

The first part of the river's 21.2 kilometres (13.2 mi) journey is mostly through forests. The last part, however, flows through farming areas.

River's Name

The name "Rivière au Lard" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Place Names Bank of the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special committee that names places in Quebec.
