The Rivière du Canot is a river located in Quebec, Canada. It flows through the area of La Tuque in the Mauricie region. This river eventually empties into the Gatineau River in a place called Lac-De La Bidière.

The Journey of the Canot River

The Canot River has several nearby water areas that influence its flow:

  • To the north: La Choquette and Brossard Lake.
  • To the east: The Rivière aux Bleuets.
  • To the south: The Gatineau River.
  • To the west: The Choquette River.

The main starting point, or "headwater," for the Rivière du Canot is Lac du Canot. This lake is about 2.5 km (1.6 mi) long from east to west and sits at an elevation of 482 m (1,581 ft). Lac du Canot is located about 1.9 km (1.2 mi) west of the Rivière aux Bleuets, which flows south.

From Lac du Canot, the Rivière du Canot flows southwest for about 5.7 km (3.5 mi). Along this path, it passes through three smaller lakes. The river then continues for 7.3 km (4.5 mi) to the south, going over many rapids, until it reaches the outlet of Lake Bennett.

After this point, the Canot River travels another 11.1 km (6.9 mi) southwest. It goes through several areas with rapids. It then reaches the outlet of Lac Rond, which is at an elevation of 356 m (1,168 ft). The Rivière du Canot flows for a final 9.3 km (5.8 mi) to the south. It then joins the Gatineau River, which makes a turn from the west and flows south.

In its upper part, the Canot River flows southwest. It runs roughly parallel to the Rivière aux Bleuets, staying on its west side.

Why is it Called Canot River?

The word "canot" means "canoe" in French. A canoe is a lightweight boat that was widely used for traveling on rivers throughout American history. Canoes are very useful because they are easy to carry (called "portaging") and can even be used as a shelter. Most importantly, they are great for moving through shallow waters.

The early explorers of this region used canoes to travel on the rivers. They named this particular river after the canoe because it was such an important way to get around.

The name "Rivière du Canot" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Place Names Bank of the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is an organization that manages place names in Quebec.
