The Rivière du Seigneur (which means River of the Lord in English) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the northwest side of the Saint Lawrence River. This river is located in the area of Les Éboulements, within the Charlevoix Regional County Municipality.

The river valley is used for forestry and farming. These are the main ways people make a living here. You can reach the upper part of the valley by roads like chemin du rang Sainte-Marie. The lower part is accessible by Route du Port and Route du Fleuve.

The river's surface usually freezes from early December to late March. However, it's safest to walk on the ice from mid-December to mid-March. The amount of water in the river changes with the seasons. A big increase in water, called the spring flood, happens in March or April.

Where the River Flows

The Rivière du Seigneur starts at a place called Lac Laterrière. This lake is small, about 0.25 kilometres (0.16 mi) long. It sits high up, at an altitude of 298 metres (978 ft), in a forest area. The main water source for Lac Laterrière is the Clermont stream.

The lake's starting point is about 5.9 kilometres (3.7 mi) northwest of Les Éboulements village. It's also about 6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi) northwest of Anse de la Vieille Église, which is on the Saint Lawrence River. The river then flows for about 10.7 kilometres (6.6 mi). During its journey, it drops about 294 metres (965 ft) in height.

From Lac Laterrière, the river flows in several parts:

  • It goes northeast for 0.2 kilometres (0.12 mi), making an S-shape. Here, it meets the Armand-Jude River.
  • Then, it turns southeast for 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi), winding a bit. It picks up water from a small mountain lake.
  • Next, it flows southeast for 4.1 kilometres (2.5 mi), curving towards the northeast. It meets another small stream here.
  • It continues south for 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) through farmland. It crosses Quebec Route 362.
  • Finally, it flows south for 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) through a steep valley. It crosses the Port road and a railway line.

The Rivière du Seigneur ends by flowing into Baie des Éboulements. This bay is on the northwest shore of the Estuary of Saint Lawrence. The river's mouth is near the hamlet of Les Éboulements-Center. It is about 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi) northeast of Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive village.

River's Name

The name "Rivière du Seigneur" became official on August 17, 1978. Before that, in 1969, it was known as "Rivière du Moulin." The Commission de toponymie du Québec keeps track of these names.
