The Armand-Jude River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the rivière du Seigneur, which then joins the mighty Saint Lawrence River. This river is found in the municipality of Les Éboulements. This area is part of the Charlevoix Regional County Municipality. It is also within the Capitale-Nationale region of Quebec.

The area around the river is mostly covered by forests. The main road serving the valley is the path of Saint-Hilarion. Another road, chemin du rang Sainte-Marie, runs along the lower part of the river. The most important economic activity here is forestry, which means growing and harvesting trees.

The Armand-Jude River usually freezes over in early December. It stays frozen until the end of March. It's generally safe to walk on the ice from mid-December to mid-March. The amount of water in the river changes with the seasons. More water flows during the spring flood, which happens in March or April.

River's Journey

The Armand-Jude River starts from a small lake. This lake is tiny, only about 0.1 kilometres (0.062 mi) long. It sits high up at an altitude of 346 metres (1,135 ft). The lake is located in a forest near Les Éboulements.

The river's starting point is:

  • About 3.7 kilometres (2.3 mi) southeast of the village of Saint-Hilarion.
  • About 8.6 kilometres (5.3 mi) northwest of the village of Les Éboulements.
  • About 21.4 kilometres (13.3 mi) southwest of the town of La Malbaie.

From its source, the Armand-Jude River flows for about 4.0 kilometres (2.5 mi). During its journey, the river drops about 56 metres (184 ft) in elevation.

How the River Flows

The river's path can be divided into two main parts:

  • For the first 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi), it flows southeast. It crosses the Saint-Hilarion path. It also makes a big curve towards the northeast. Here, it meets a smaller stream coming from the northwest.
  • For the next 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi), it continues southeast. It flows through forests and farmlands. It crosses the chemin du rang Sainte-Marie. It passes between two small lakes. Finally, it bends southeast until it reaches its end.

The Armand-Jude River ends by flowing into the north bank of the rivière du Seigneur. This meeting point is located:

  • About 6.5 kilometres (4.0 mi) southeast of Saint-Hilarion village.
  • About 22.2 kilometres (13.8 mi) southwest of downtown La Malbaie.
  • About 5.9 kilometres (3.7 mi) southwest of Les Éboulements village.

Naming the River

The name "Armand-Jude" was first recorded in 1976. This happened during a survey to collect local place names. The official name "rivière Armand-Jude" was formally approved on August 17, 1978. This approval came from the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a government board for place names in Quebec.
