Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock was a cool hip hop group from Harlem, New York City. The group had two members: Rob Base, whose real name is Robert Ginyard (born in 1967), and DJ E-Z Rock, whose real name was Rodney "Skip" Bryce (1967–2014).

They became super famous for their 1988 hit song, "It Takes Two". This song was so popular it became a Top 40 hit and sold over a million copies! Their album, also called It Takes Two, was also a huge success, selling millions of copies too. Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock helped make rap music popular with everyone, not just hip hop fans.

Their Music Journey

The group's first song released in the U.S. was "DJ Interview". It appeared on a record called World to World. This helped them get a record deal with Profile Records in 1987. Their friend, producer David Wynn, helped them make many songs on their first two albums.

"It Takes Two" Song

Their first song with Profile Records was "It Takes Two". This song used parts of older songs by James Brown and Lyn Collins from 1972. This is called "sampling" in music. The song first became popular in their local area. Then, it slowly climbed the Billboard music charts across the country. It sold so many copies that it earned a "multi-platinum" award. The song also reached number 3 on the dance music charts.

The It Takes Two Album

After the song's success, they quickly made an album, also named It Takes Two. This album had another big hit song called "Joy and Pain". This song also used samples from other artists like Maze and The Olympic Runners. "Joy and Pain" reached the top 10 on the dance charts and number 58 on the Hot 100.

Another song from the album, "Get On the Dance Floor", became number 1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1989. Because of these popular songs, the It Takes Two album sold over seven million copies!

Rob Base's Solo Work

In 1989, Rob Base released his own album called The Incredible Base. It didn't sell as many copies as It Takes Two. However, one song from this album, "Turn It Out (Go Base)", became popular on the dance charts.

In 2008, their famous song "It Takes Two" was ranked number 37 on VH1's list of the 100 greatest hip hop songs ever!
