Robert Barry (born December 4, 1932 – died January 8, 2018) was a talented American jazz musician. He was a percussionist, which means he played drums and other instruments you hit. Robert Barry played with many famous musicians like Miles Davis and Johnny Griffin. He was most famous for his work with Sun Ra and his band, The Sun Ra Arkestra.
Early Life and Music
Robert Barry was born in Chicago, a big city in the United States. He went to DuSable High School. There, he studied music under a special teacher named Captain Walter Dyett. This teacher helped many young musicians learn and grow.
Robert Barry's Music Journey
In the 1950s, Robert Barry joined the Sun Ra Arkestra. This was a very unique and exciting jazz band led by Sun Ra. They were known for their space-themed music and costumes! Robert Barry played drums on some of their famous albums. These included We Travel the Space Ways, Nubians of Plutonia, and Sun Song.
The Arkestra band moved to New York City in 1961. However, Robert Barry decided to stay in Chicago. This meant he stopped playing with the band at that time. He continued his music career in Chicago.
