Robert Blennerhassett (MP for Tralee) facts for kids
Robert Blennerhassett was an important soldier and politician. He lived in Ireland a long time ago, from about 1622 to 1689. He was part of a family known as the Anglo-Irish. This means his family had English roots but lived in Ireland for many years.
Robert was probably born at his family's home, Ballycarty Castle. This castle was in County Kerry, Ireland. His family, the Blennerhassetts, originally came from a place called Cumberland. This is in England. Robert's grandfather, also named Robert Blennerhassett, moved to Kerry. He came during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. This was part of a plan to settle English people in Ireland. Robert also had a brother named John Blennerhassett. John was also a politician.
Robert Blennerhassett's Life
Robert Blennerhassett was a soldier in the New Model Army. This army fought during a time of conflict called the Irish Confederate Wars. Because he served in this army, his family was able to keep their land.
After the wars, the king returned to power. This event was called the Restoration of the Monarchy. Robert Blennerhassett received a full pardon. This meant he was forgiven for his role in the wars.
A Politician's Role
Robert Blennerhassett became a Member of Parliament. He represented the town of Tralee in 1674. His grandfather had also held this important job.
Later, in 1682, Robert served as the High Sheriff of Kerry. A High Sheriff was a very important local official. They were in charge of law and order in their county.
His Family and Home
Robert Blennerhassett married his second cousin, Avice Conway. She was the daughter of Edward Conway. Because Avice was her father's only heir, Robert gained control of Castle Conway. This castle was in Killorglin.
Castle Conway became the main home for the Blennerhassett family. It was part of their large estate in Kerry, which was about 7,000 acres. Robert and Avice had eleven children together.
Robert Blennerhassett had many descendants. He was the grandfather of Conway Blennerhassett. He was also the great-grandfather of William Spring. Another great-grandson was Sir Rowland Blennerhassett, 1st Baronet. His great-great-grandson was Harman Blennerhassett.
Sadly, Robert's wife, Avice, drowned at sea in 1683. The last time Robert Blennerhassett was mentioned in records was in 1689.
