Sir Robert Child (born 1674 – died 1721) was an important English banker and politician. He took over his family's banking business, called Child & Co., which was based in London. In 1715, he became the leader, or Chairman, of the powerful East India Company. He also worked as a Member of Parliament (MP) for different areas, first for Helston from 1710 to 1713, and then for Devizes from 1713 to 1715.
Early Life and Family
Robert Child was the oldest son of Sir Francis Child. His father was also a Member of Parliament and even served as the Lord Mayor of London in 1698. He was also a special Jeweller to King William III.
Robert's father gained ownership of a large estate called Osterley Park. This happened because the previous owner could not pay back a loan. Robert later inherited this big property, and it became his main home.
A Career in Politics
Robert Child became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Helston. He held this position from 1710 to 1713. After that, he ran for election in Devizes, which was his father's old area. He served as an MP for Devizes from 1713 to 1715. In 1714, he was given the special title of 'Sir', becoming a knight.
He also worked as an alderman in London from 1713 until he passed away. Robert Child never married. When he died, his property and wealth went to his brother, Francis. It was Robert's nephews, also named Francis and Robert, who later arranged for the famous architect Adam to build the beautiful Osterley House that we see today.
