Robert Clifford, 3rd Baron Clifford facts for kids
Robert de Clifford, 3rd Baron de Clifford, was an important member of the Clifford family. He was also known as the 3rd Lord of Skipton. The Clifford family owned the land and castle of Skipton for a very long time, from 1310 to 1676. Robert was born on November 5, 1305, and he passed away on May 20, 1344.
He was the second son of Robert de Clifford, 1st Baron de Clifford and Maud de Clare. His mother, Maud, was the oldest daughter of Thomas de Clare, Lord of Thomond and Juliana FitzGerald.
Becoming Baron de Clifford
Robert's older brother, Roger de Clifford, 2nd Baron de Clifford, was the Baron before him. However, Roger lost his title because of serious trouble with the king. This meant his title was taken away.
In 1327, Robert's title was given back to him. This made him the 3rd Baron de Clifford. It was a big deal for him and his family to get the title back.
Family Life
In 1328, Robert de Clifford married Isabel. She was the daughter of Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley. They got married at Berkeley Castle.
Robert and Isabel had seven children together. Their oldest son, Robert de Clifford, 4th Baron de Clifford, later became the next Baron de Clifford after his father.
