Robert Darcy: A British Nobleman
Robert Darcy was born into a very important family. He was the second son of John Darcy, Lord Conyers. His grandfather was Conyers Darcy, who was the 2nd Earl of Holderness.
Early Life and Titles
When his father passed away in 1688, Robert became known as Lord Conyers. Later, in 1692, he inherited his grandfather's title and became the Earl of Holderness. This meant he was a "peer," a member of the highest social class in Britain, often with a seat in the House of Lords. He also inherited two other old titles: 10th Baron Darcy de Knayth and 7th Baron Conyers.
In 1698, he went to King's College, Cambridge, which is a famous university.
Important Roles in Government
As the Earl of Holderness, Robert Darcy took on many important roles:
- In 1714, he was chosen to be the Lord Lieutenant of the North Riding of Yorkshire. This job meant he was the King's representative in that area, responsible for local defense and order.
- He also joined the Privy Council. This was a group of trusted advisors to the King.
- In 1718, he became the First Lord of Trade. This was a very important role where he helped manage Britain's trade with other countries.
- From 1719 until his death, he was a Lord of the Bedchamber. This meant he was a close personal attendant to the King.
Family Life
On May 26, 1715, Robert Darcy married Lady Frederica Schomberg. She was the eldest daughter of the 3rd Duke of Schomberg. They had two children who survived:
- A son named Robert (1718–1778), who would later become the 4th Earl of Holderness.
- A daughter named Caroline (died 1778), who married the 4th Marquess of Lothian.
Robert Darcy, the 3rd Earl of Holderness, passed away in 1721. His son, Robert Darcy, inherited his title. Later, his wife Frederica married Benjamin Mildmay, who became the 1st Earl FitzWalter.
