Robert Dillon, who later became the 1st Baron Clonbrock, was an important Irish politician. He was also a member of the Privy Council of Ireland, a group of advisors to the monarch. He lived from 1754 to 1795.

Robert Dillon came from a family involved in politics. His grandfather, also named Robert Dillon, was a Member of Parliament. He represented the area of Dungarvan. He served in the Irish House of Commons, which was like the parliament for Ireland at the time.

Robert Dillon's Political Career

Robert Dillon followed in his grandfather's footsteps. In 1776, he was elected to the Irish Parliament. He represented the area of Lanesborough. He held this position for many years, until 1790.

In 1790, Robert Dillon received a special honor. He was made a Baron in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became a Lord. His new title was Baron Clonbrock, named after Clonbrock in County Galway. In 1795, he was also chosen to be an Irish Privy Counsellor. This was a high-ranking advisory role. Sadly, he passed away before he could officially take this position.

His Family Life

In 1776, Lord Clonbrock married Letitia Greene. She was the daughter of John Greene from Old Abbey in County Limerick. Robert Dillon died in July 1795 at Clonbrock, County Galway. He was 41 years old.

His son, Luke, took over his title as Baron Clonbrock. Lady Clonbrock, his wife, married again in 1802. Her second husband was Clement Archer, who was a State Surgeon in Ireland. Lady Clonbrock passed away in September 1806.
