Robert Douglas was born in 1573. He was the second son of Malcolm Douglas of Mains. His mother was Janet Cunningham.

Life at Court

Robert Douglas began his career at the royal court after his older brother passed away. He took his brother's place and quickly rose through the ranks.

Important Roles

  • Master of the Horse: He was in charge of the royal stables and horses for Prince Henry, who was the son of King James VI and I.
  • Gentleman of the Bedchamber: He served as a personal attendant to both James VI and I and his son, King Charles I. This was a very close and trusted position.
  • Master of the Household: He managed the royal household for King Charles I, overseeing everything from servants to daily operations.

Royal Missions and Honors

In July 1607, Robert Douglas was sent to France to deliver a special gift of horses. He was made a knight in 1609, which meant he was given the title "Sir." In December 1612, he had an important role at Prince Henry's funeral, leading the horse of state. He also traveled to France again in July 1616 with Lord Hay.

He became a member of the Privy Council of Scotland, advising the king on important matters. In 1633, during the coronation of King Charles I, Robert Douglas received a special honor. He was given the title Viscount of Belhaven, which is a noble title in Scotland. This meant he became a member of the Peerage of Scotland.

Family and Legacy

In 1611, Lord Belhaven married Nicola Moray. She was the daughter of Robert Murray of Abercairny. Sadly, Nicola passed away in November 1612, shortly after giving birth.

Robert Douglas had a daughter named Susanna Douglas. She married her cousin, Robert Douglas of Blackerston. When Lord Belhaven passed away, his property, including the Gorbals Mansion House, went to his nephew and son-in-law.

Lord Belhaven died in Edinburgh in January 1639. He was buried in Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh, where his monument can still be seen today. Since he did not have any sons who survived him, his title of Viscount of Belhaven ended when he died.
