Robert Echlin (born 1674 – died November 20, 1706) was an important person in Ireland's history. He served as a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country.

Robert was the oldest son of Sir Henry Echlin, who was a very respected judge. His father was also given a special title called a baronet in 1721. Even though their family had powerful friends, they faced tough times financially when Robert's grandfather died early. However, Robert's father worked hard to make the family rich again. He bought a lot of land and made their main home at Clonagh Castle.

Robert Echlin's Family Life

Robert Echlin married a woman named Penelope Eustace. She came from a well-known family in Harristown, County Kildare, who owned a lot of land.

Together, Robert and Penelope had a son, who was also named Robert. This son later became Sir Robert Echlin, the 2nd Baronet. After Robert Echlin passed away, Penelope married again to Edward Stratford.

Serving in Parliament

Robert Echlin was a member of the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament or government of Ireland at the time, where important decisions were made.

He represented different areas during his time in politics:

  • From 1692 to 1693, he represented Newtownards.
  • From 1695 to 1699, he represented Newry.
  • He represented Newry again from 1703 until he died in 1706.
