Early Life and Military Service

Robert Gordon-Canning was born in Hartpury, Gloucestershire, England. He was the only son of William James Gordon-Canning and Clara. His family had a long history, and he even claimed to be related to the famous poet Lord Byron.

He went to Eton College, a well-known school. After school, he joined the army. He became a second lieutenant in the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars in 1906. Later, he was promoted to lieutenant in the 10th (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars in 1912.

Serving in World War I

When World War I began, Gordon-Canning quickly became a temporary captain in 1914. This rank was made permanent in 1915. In June 1917, he received the Military Cross. This award is given for great bravery and dedication during battle. He left the army in 1925.

Political Interests and Views

After his time in the military, Gordon-Canning became interested in politics. He supported groups that wanted independence for Arab nations. He was especially involved in helping Morocco during the Rif War in the 1920s. He visited Morocco to support their independence efforts.

He also wrote several poetry books during this time. These included "Flashlights from Afar" (1920) and "A Pagan Shrine" (1922). In 1929, he traveled to Palestine. There, he met with leaders of the Palestinian National Movement. He often spoke out against British policies in Palestine.

Joining the British Union of Fascists

In 1934, Gordon-Canning joined the British Union of Fascists (BUF). This was a political group in Britain that believed in fascism. Fascism is a type of government led by a strong leader. It often involves strong nationalism and control over people's lives.

He became an expert on foreign affairs for the BUF. He was even the best man at the wedding of the BUF leader, Sir Oswald Mosley, in 1936. Gordon-Canning wrote for fascist newspapers. He also created the BUF slogan "Mind Britain's Business." He left the BUF in 1939 after a disagreement with Mosley. He then joined other similar political groups.

Personal Life and Later Years

In June 1939, Gordon-Canning met Mary Maguire, an actress from Hollywood. They got married in August 1939, even though there was a 30-year age difference between them.

Internment During the War

In July 1940, during World War II, Gordon-Canning was held by the British government. This was under a rule called Defence Regulation 18B. This rule allowed the government to hold people they thought might be a danger to the country during wartime. He was released in 1943. His son, Michael, was born in 1941 but sadly died as a baby. Gordon-Canning and Mary Maguire divorced in 1944.

Post-War Activities

After the war, Gordon-Canning continued to hold strong political views. In 1945, he bought a large statue of Hitler at an auction. He told reporters that he bought it to challenge certain groups. He was still in touch with others who shared his political ideas.

A journalist named John Roy Carlson wrote about Gordon-Canning in his 1951 book. Carlson claimed Gordon-Canning spoke positively about Hitler. He also said Gordon-Canning's London apartment was used for meetings by Arab nationalist groups. Gordon-Canning claimed Arabs trusted him completely.

Robert Gordon-Canning remarried in 1952. He passed away on January 4, 1967. In 2002, government files about him were made public.
