Who Was Sir Robert Gordon?

Sir Robert Gordon was a British diplomat who served his country in several places around the world. He was known for his work in Brazil, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria. He also owned Balmoral Castle for a time, which later became a famous royal residence.

Early Life and Family

Robert Gordon was born in 1791. He was the younger son of George Gordon, Lord Haddo. His older brother became the 4th Earl of Aberdeen, a very important title in Britain. Robert Gordon went to college at St John's College, Cambridge. This is a famous university in England.

A Career in Diplomacy

Sir Robert Gordon spent many years working for the British government. He was a special representative, or "Envoy Extraordinary," for Britain in different countries.

  • Brazil: From 1826 to 1828, he worked in Brazil. During this time, he helped create an important agreement called the British-Brazilian Treaty of 1826. This treaty was about trade and other agreements between the two countries.
  • Ottoman Empire: After Brazil, he moved to the Ottoman Empire (which is now mostly Turkey). He served there from 1828 to 1831.
  • Austria: Later in his career, from 1841 to 1847, he was the British representative in Austria. This was his last major diplomatic role.

Balmoral Castle and Later Life

In 1830, Sir Robert Gordon took over the lease of Balmoral Castle. This beautiful castle is located in Scotland. He lived there for several years.

Sir Robert Gordon died in 1847. His death was caused by choking on a fish bone. After he passed away, Prince Albert bought the Balmoral estate. Prince Albert bought it as a special gift for his wife, Queen Victoria. Balmoral Castle then became a beloved home for the British Royal Family.
