Robert's Early Life and Marriage
Robert was born in 1356. Around the year 1376, he married Joanna of Durazzo. Joanna was the daughter of Charles, Duke of Durazzo. Through this marriage, Robert became the Duke of Durazzo. This title was part of the Kingdom of Albania.
Becoming Duke of Durazzo
Robert became the Duke of Durazzo because of his wife, Joanna. This was a common way to gain titles in those times. He held this title until 1383. In that year, a leader named Karl Thopia took control of Durrës. This meant Robert lost his role as Duke of Durazzo.
Count of Eu and His End
Robert's father, John, died on April 6, 1387. When his father died, Robert inherited the title of Count of Eu. He also inherited lands like Saint-Valery and Ault. However, Robert was in Naples at the time. He never found out about his father's death. He also never got to rule his new lands.
On July 20, 1387, Robert and his wife Joanna died suddenly. They were staying at Castel dell'Ovo in Naples. Their lives ended due to poisoning. This act was ordered by Joanna's own sister, Margaret. Margaret was the Queen Regent of Naples at that time. Robert and Joanna were buried together. Their resting place is the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples.
His Family and Successor
Robert and Joanna did not have any children. Because of this, Robert's titles passed to his younger brother. His brother, Philip, became the next Count of Eu.
